Thursday 11 June 2026--If there's another Madelinot beach that rivals the Plage de la Grande Echouérie in the north, it's the Plage du Sandy Hook, a long spit of dune curving northeast from the foot of Île du Havre-Aubert. It's a short drive from my room down the dirt road to the parking lot just back of the dunes. From there, I walk a mile east on the beach, and back. I can only wish that my burning feet would permit me to go another two and a half miles to the tip, nearly as close to Entry Island as to La Grave. What I am able to do is nonetheless sublime. I have nothing more to say...there are photos.
After, I drive up to Île du Cap-aux-Meules to look at the cliffs at Belle Anse and the Phare du Borgot. Then I have pint at the Magdalens' marvelous brewery, À l'abri de la Tempête, housed in a former crab processing plant down at the end of Chemin Coulombe. They've added a terrasse since I was here last, looking out over the meadows toward the Dune de l'Ouest. It's just too bad that I haven't found anywhere to stay within walking distance.
I have dinner this evening at Café de la Grave, Pot-en-Pot, a Madelinot seafood pie. My post-pandemic complaint is the apparent necessity to book everything ahead, which makes a place like this feel a little less informal and relaxed. I've booked for eight o'clock, no earlier times having been available on the online booking engine, but when I walk in, the place is half full. Maybe they only book a certain number of tables, leaving the rest for walk-ins...I can't help but feel that if I'd planned to walk in, I'd have found the place jammed. I have a nice chat with a couple from British Columbia, originally from Nova Scotia--they'd never managed a visit here, when they lived in the east. The gent tells me he's in television. I think I might recognize him, if I lived in the right place.
