Friday 26 June 2026--The Bay of Fundy is famously foggy. I've seen a fair bit of it, but usually just for a period in the morning. Today, however, Campobello is socked in. I don't mind...it should make for some good photos.
One thing I'd like to see is the Head Harbour Lighthouse, which stands at the end of a long slender ridge at the north of the island. There's a kiosk in the car park at the end of the road, with two lads taking ten-dollar donations for the upkeep of the lightstation. It's only possible to visit at low tide; one must cross a sandbar to a little island, traverse a footbridge to another little island, and cross another seaweed-covered sandbar to the ultimate islet, on which the light stands. One of the lads tells me he doesn't recommend going on a day like today. I content myself with a photo of the first island, shrouded in fog. Probably should have gone, anyway...I'm too easily dissuaded.
Back up the road, I take photos at fog-shrouded fjord-like Head Harbour itself. Then head down mid-island to visit the quirky hippie nanobrewery Mother Mushroom. I enjoy a blether with the brewer, who tells me, among other things, that he's just received a parcel of dulse from Grand Manan for use in one of his beers. He's on his own today, so he turns down the heat on his kettle to sell me a few cans, lest it boil over while he isn't looking.
Drive down to Herring Cove and tromp around on the beach, Campobello's longest at a mile and a quarter. Then pop into the restaurant at the Herring Cove Golf Lodge, looking to have dinner. There's a private function going on, so I head back to Pollock Cove and have fish and chips at the Pier Waterfront, before retiring to my cottage.
Campobello is more interesting than I'd given it credit for. I wouldn't go out of my way to stay again, but I'd be happy to spend another couple nights on my way to or from one Maritime destination or another.
